ANDORRA LA VELLA, ANDORRA
APRIL 2024
Located at the crossroads of southern France and northern Spain, Andorra is an often overlooked country in Western Europe. As the world grows older and increasingly interconnected, smaller centers of culture face the challenge of preserving their identity. In response, there is a need not simply to return to the past, but to draw upon it as a foundation for progress, allowing history to propel it’s people toward the future.
The Museu Nacional d’Art d’Andorra embodies this philosophy through an architectural expression of the country's enclosed wonder, reflecting both its historical identity and its emerging modernity.

SITE PLAN
Constructed with recycled stone along its foundation and lower exterior, the museum's outer shell blends into the surrounding urban fabric as though it has always been part of the city's history. In contrast, the interior and upper gallery levels introduce curved surfaces and a minimalist white shell, revealing a contemporary architectural language concealed within the traditional exterior.
This contrast represents the innovative spirit and evolving culture that exist beyond Andorra's historical image. By bringing together the old and the new, the museum creates a striking environment that encourages creativity and perseverance while remaining rooted in its heritage.
SECTION
To respect the site's original use and its relationship with the surrounding city, the museum preserves the street level as an open, publicly accessible covered plaza. This space extends the urban environment into the building, providing an area for public gathering and everyday activity. Above the plaza, the museum's galleries offer a contrasting spatial experience. Their flowing surfaces and minimalist forms establish a contemporary setting for the exhibition of art, creating a thoughtful environment in which the works can be experienced and appreciated.
Together, the public plaza and elevated museum spaces establish a relationship between the everyday life of the city and the cultural experiences housed within the building.

EXTERIOR RENDERING
Art is at its finest when it remains true to its intentions while honoring those who came before it. A museum should extend this responsibility, not only celebrating the culture it represents but also providing a thoughtful platform for its artistic expressions to be displayed and experienced.
The Museu Nacional d’Art d’Andorra seeks to fulfill this responsibility by honoring the country's heritage while embracing its future. Through the blending of historical materials and contemporary architectural forms, the museum becomes a place where tradition and innovation coexist in harmony. Our hope is that those who walk through its walls leave with a renewed sense of pride in their country, a deeper appreciation of its historical significance, and an understanding of the future they have the power to shape themselves.
